It really amazes me, all of the things that men and women go through to be beautiful according to our cultural standards. Some may say it's straight hair, $200 skinny jeans, perfectly made-up eyes, flawless skin, rock-hard abs, etc. But the truth is, that is ALL cultural.
One thing I could just kick Hollywood's butt for doing is putting unnecessary weights and pressures on us to look a certain way to be acceptable. It may not seem absurd to us, and we may not think it's extreme measures to work out for hours a day on a full body-gym, get botox injections or tummy tucks or face-lifts to be beautiful/handsome. But take a look at this video on what this culture defines as beauty and the extreme measures taken to accomplish it.
To us, this is unthinkable--to them, it's not. But if you were going to ask one of these Indonesians if ripping open your stomach to take out fat for a tummy tuck, or injecting hormones into your lips is unthinkable, they might just say yes, it is. Who knows!
Okay, Rose, what's the point you're driving at? Well, this is it: doing things for cultures sake to be acceptable is just as ridiculous as chiseling your teeth because it makes you look beautiful. It's a cultural thing.
The moral of this post? Just be yourself. Forget it if you don't have rock-hard abs, if you are as skinny as a twig or full-figured as Betty Boop. In my opinion, as long as you are focusing on perfecting inward beauty and hygienically caring for your physical self, there's not a thing you have to change. You truly are beautiful just the way you are. Don't let the media tell you otherwise. Those are my thoughts; take it or leave it as you will.
